Chisinau, 4 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean has conveyed a message of support to the Georgian people, which fights for democracy at ample pro-European demonstrations staged in the capital of Georgia and other cities. ‘’We support their right to peaceful assembly and to a democratic future aligned with the EU’s values,’’ reads the PM’s message.

„In the last five days, we have seen the firm commitment of Georgia’s people for democracy and its European aspirations. Moldova is in solidarity with the Georgian people. We support their right to peaceful assembly and to a democratic future aligned with the EU values,’’ PM Dorin Recean said.

Georgia has been fighting for the sixth day in a row for democracy at ample pro-European demonstrations, held in the country’s capital and other cities. The protests broke out, after Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobahidze had informed that his country was freezing the starting of the negotiations on accession to the European Union till 2028, according to EFE and Reuters.

The law-enforcement bodies try to suppress the protests with tear gas. Over 200 demonstrators were detained by the police. The Georgian police beaten and arrested the leader of the Georgian opposition, Nika Gvaramia, during a raid at offices of his party, against a background of anti-governmental protests and threats with repression on behalf of the country’s prime minister, AFP reported.

The groups for human rights and the pro-EU president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, criticized the forcible repression of the police in the last week. President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili said that the people detained by the policy ‘’were subjected to systematic beating.’’

The Council of Europe today expressed concern about the disproportionate use of force by the police from Georgia. The organization called on the Tbilisi authorities to observe the freedoms of expression, of assembly and of press, as well as to set free the arrested demonstrators, AFP also said.

Georgia, a country from Caucasus with a population of about 3.7 million residents, has been shaken by unrest since the parliamentary elections from 26 October. The Georgian Dream is accused of betraying the country’s long-lasting tradition to join EU and of getting Georgia closer to Russia.
