Deputy PM for European integration says Moldova moves firmly towards launch of negotiations on accession to EU

Chisinau, 7 June /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova moves with firm steps towards the official launch of the negotiations on accession to the European Union. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov today made statements to this effect, after the European Commission had informed that Moldova and Ukraine were prepared to start the negotiations on accession to EU.  

„Today, in the report of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the governments of the member states to the European Union – the main group of preparing the Council, Moldova was evaluated as having fulfilled also the last three recommendations of the European Commission. The next step represents the adoption by the EU member states of the framework of negotiation and the summoning of the first Intergovernmental Conference,’’ Cristina Gherasimov said.  

Also, the official thanked the states ‘’which conveyed, yesterday, to the Council’s Belgian presidency a joint letter for supporting the organization of the first Intergovernmental Conference till the end of June – Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and  Sweden.’’  

The European Commission today informed the EU ambassadors that Moldova and Ukraine had fulfilled the conditions for starting the negotiations on accession to the European Union.

In December 2023, the European Council ruled to open the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to EU. At the same time, on 13 March 2024, the European Commission submitted the draft framework of negotiation with Moldova to the European Council for consideration.
