Moldovan president to donate Robert Blum Award for Democracy 2024

Chisinau, May 18 /MOLDPRES/- Today in Leipzig, head of state Maia Sandu received Robert Blum Award for Democracy 2024, offered under the patronage of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The award is accompanied by 25,000 euros, which Maia Sandu will donate, the presidential press service has reported.

"This prize is not only a recognition of my efforts, but also a proof of the resilience and determination of Moldovan citizens on the path to democracy," the official said.

After yesterday's meeting Steinmeier said "At a time when war has returned to Europe and when liberal democracy needs to assert itself at home and abroad, you are leading the country with confidence and courage. May this Prize give you the strength to continue your commitment to a democratic and European Moldova".

The Robert Blum Award for Democracy is awarded every two years to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the promotion of human rights and democracy. Robert Blum was a 19th century German politician who fought for German unification, justice and freedom.

The head of state is on a working visit to Germany on 17-18 May, where she met with German officials including President Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bundestag President Bärbel Bas. She also met with the Moldovan community in Berlin on Friday.
